Ups and Downs

So, it would seem that my choice in graduate school has just gotten a bit harder to make. It looks like I will not be getting a GTA position from Tech. As such, now I have to be leaning a bit more to Radford. I love Tech with all my heart, but Radford has been infinitely more welcoming than Tech; they've outlined a program that, without a rebuttal from Tech, appears to be much better both in terms of guidance and experience. While the compensation from Radford isn't the greatest, it's certainly better than nothing. My stipend would be about what I make now, so I could live on it.

I hate saying it, but now I don't think I can come to Tech for grad school next year. I really hate saying that. To go to Tech would put me in about $20,000 of debt while Radford would only cost me about $6,000, and would pay me $16,000 or so while I was there. Not to mention, I would graduate from Radford with four semesters of teaching experience.

Also, in the downer side, the Caps lost their second straight and are behind 2-0 in the series with the Rangers. Varlamov was very good in goal, didn't make any real mistakes, but the offense was just NOT there. The coordination with teammates was lacking and overall, almost no one managed to do anything very smoothly. Let's hope they can improve on the road. 2-0 is surmountable if they get their heads right, 3-0 is a bit much though.

Enough of the down, now for the up:

Signed the lease for our new apartment in Windsor Hills on Thursday and put the security deposit down on Saturday. We start move in on May 29th and I can't describe how stoked I am. The place has a 24-7 Gym that I can use and should be much quieter than the apartment I have now.

Also, Chandler came into town this weekend. I forgot how much I miss that kid. We had a great time at the house on Friday night, celebrating his acceptance into ECU for grad school and his getting a paid position there. Then Saturday we watched the Caps lose and just hung out at the house afterward. Then we did Chinese for dinner, which is always delicious and watched Dylan pick fights with Chandler.

I didn't get a chance to see Chandler off on Sunday, but I trust he made it home ok. I did work on my Arabic a bit (it's been a while) and got through unit 2 before getting my ass kicked by the first part of unit 3. For those of you unfamiliar with Rosetta Stone, each level has 4 units which are broken up into 4 lessons. So technically I'm right about half way done with Level 1, but in reality it'll probably take me a good bit longer to get the next two lessons, even if I work more regularly. Not to mention the fact that I can definitely improve my proficiency in the first two units.

On the fraternity front, I went to initiation Sunday night. This new class definitely seems solid and I have high hopes for those guys. Each guy I talked to seemed very solid, very interested in the fraternity and the studd beyond the social. A few that I've talked to also definitely have a lot of leadership potential. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend...

All the best,

-TES
