I woke up this morning with a smile seeing a ring on Kirsten's finger. And I kept that smile pretty much all day at work.
She called her dad today and told him. I don't know that he was all that enthused. I had actually asked for his permission over winter break, and he gave it to me at first, but rescinded it the next day after having time to think it over. I understood his hesitance and would have asked again, but I never got a chance. It kind of hit me yesterday that it was the right time to do it. That day. And I didn't know when I would get another chance if I didn't take that one.
As Jim and many other rapscallions have said: "It's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask permission."
While I don't think that's the best of tactics most of the time, this time I'll apply it. He might be coming down this weekend and I hope that he will understand, since he'll be my father in law, and I'll have to see him on a regular basis for the rest of our lives...
In other news, I got an email telling me that I got an assistantship position at Radford. I was impressed by their turnaround time. Apparently, according to my potential advisor, the GTA position gives a stipend of $8,000 (from his email it sounded more like per year than per semester) and half of tuition costs. I have two weeks to make my desicion on that, and I should hear more from Tech sometime next week... so we shall see.
I went to Kirsten's film class with her tonight where we watched "Battle of Algiers" or something like that. It was interesting enough. I think I got the most entertainment from trying to understand the arabic than anything else though. I pretty much only ever caught "Yes" or "No." Oh well, here's to more practice.
In sports, it looks like the Nats are on their way to another big loss, but the Caps beat Atlanta again, 4-2. Huzzah. I think they need one, maybe two more wins to lock up the second seed in the Eastern Division.
I think that's all for now.

Atticus loves the Battle for Algiers, I've seen that movie a few times. It's interesting mainly because it covers the first real instances of Arabic terrorism against the west. My favorite line is when they're interviewing what's-his-schmuck, the leader, about how he feels about blowing up innocent civilians in cafes with homemade bombs. He responds: "Give me your planes and missiles, and I'll give you our baskets." Certainly put things in perspective at least. Good luck with Fran and . . . Bob is it?
ReplyDeleteYup, Bob. And yeah, that was a very good line... It was weird because I basically despised both sides... But yeah, very interesting to watch
